Hose Sleeve Protection Stops Damage from UV, Abrasion & Fire
Date: 09/02/26
From hydraulic hoses on UK refuse collection lorries to subsea cables in South East Asia, the hose sleeve protection of thermo Firesleeve from Sleeve It is trusted around the world to deliver enduring safety in a wide range of circumstances.
We’ve discussed the many benefits of Firesleeve hose sleeve protection in our other blog articles. This time, we’ll be looking at real-life examples of how Sleeve It has risen to the challenge of hose sleeve protection, supporting everyone from local councils to international wind energy cable suppliers.
What is Firesleeve Hose Sleeve Protection?
Firesleeve hose sleeve protection is a high-quality protective thermal sleeve that comprises two layers:
-
Woven E-glass inner – providing continuous, flexible protection at operating temperatures up to 260°C and molten splash at 1200°C
-
Silicone elastomer coating – which melts to form a fire-resistant layer of silicon dioxide when exposed to flame
Firesleeve can be fitted as a continuous sleeve or retrofitted as Firesleeve Hook and Loop during upgrades and repairs.
Case Study One – Burning Batteries in Bin Lorries
-
The problem: A local refuse collection client approached Sleeve It with the problem of fires in their refuse collection vehicles. These fires had become more frequent due to the rise in use of lithium batteries in disposable vapes. When these are disposed of in general waste, they have a tendency to catch fire in the collection vehicle, burning fiercely and rapidly igniting the rest of the load. Without protection, these fires can quickly compromise the hydraulic hoses that operate the load dumping mechanism. This means that operators have very little time in which to dump the load and save the vehicle, and many vehicles were being lost as their burning load could not be safely dumped in time.
-
The solution: Sleeve It engineers assessed the vehicles and found that just two sizes of Firesleeve hose sleeve protection were required. These were supplied as Firesleeve Hook and Loop, which could be fitted to the vehicles without the need to disconnect the hydraulic hoses. This low-cost solution meant minimal downtime for each vehicle and little disruption to the service.
-
The result: As a result of the retrofit of Firesleeve hose sleeve protection, operators now have a much longer window of opportunity in which to dump a burning load safely, while still protecting the vehicle and the safety of the operators.
Case Study Two – Protecting Wind Power Cables from the Sun
-
The problem: A major cable supplier was suffering issues with UV damage, abrasion and fire in subsea power cables as they came onshore from offshore windfarms in South East Asia. The cables, in bundles of 102mm and 215mm, were protected under the water, but needed additional protection once they reached shore.
-
The solution: Sleeve It manufactured test lengths of Firesleeve in the sizes required. A test rig was then built in Vietnam to demonstrate the effectiveness of our product in resisting UV damage and abrasion while protecting cables from fire. Sleeve It’s first-class service also had a part to play, with the company offering to provide cut lengths specifically designed to fit the cable trays used in the installation, as well as providing Firesleeve Hook and Loop options for easy installation on site.
-
The result: The comprehensive testing, provided free of charge by Sleeve It, demonstrated the suitability of the product. Sleeve It has now been specified in the build of the project, which includes 350 offshore wind farms across the region.
