What Is Thermo Firesleeve? 5 Critical Applications

Thermo Firesleeve is a protective thermal sleeve for pipes, hoses, wires and cables. It is made from an E-glass fibre woven inner layer, coated with a fire-resistant layer of silicone rubber, and it can withstand sustained operating temperatures of up to 260°C and molten splash at temperatures up to 1200°C.

Thermo Firesleeve is used to keep heat out, to protect equipment and connections from environmental hazards, as well as keeping heat in, to protect operators from extreme temperatures, burns and other injuries.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the composition of Thermo Firesleeve and see how it’s used across a wide range of different sectors, across the world, from traditional heavy industries to cutting edge offshore wind farms.

The Composition: How Does Thermo Firesleeve Work?

Thermo Firesleeve works in two ways across the two layers:

  • Inner sleeve – this is made from a texturised, bulked 'E' glass fibre yarn, knitted to form a continuous flexible tubular textile sleeve. This provides impressive heat protection while still allowing the complete flexibility required for complex piping or wiring systems. E-Glass has a tensile strength of 3445Mpa and a compressive strength of 1080MPa, and has no true melting point below 1200°C.

  • Outer coating – this is made from high-grade fire-resistant silicone elastomer rubber. This resists oils and hydraulic fluids, as well as most acids and alkalis. When exposed to flame, this outer coating melts to create a protective layer of silicon dioxide, or silica, which protects the inner sleeve below.

The Protection: How Does Thermo Firesleeve Protect Plant and People

Thermo Firesleeve offers protection in a number of ways, including:

  • Protecting equipment - from heat and molten splash in manufacturing

  • Protecting nearby equipment - in excessive heat environments, such as engine bays

  • Protecting personnel - from burns, scalds and other injuries from hot pipes and steam lines

  • Protecting profits - by retaining heat within pipework and reducing energy loss

  • Protecting reputations – by helping your company to comply with all relevant H&S regulations

5 Critical Applications of Thermo Firesleeve in Industry

Combining high-quality protection with durable, flexible versatility, Thermo Firesleeve lends itself to a huge variety of uses. Wherever there is a heat source, either within pipes and hoses or in the surrounding environment, Firesleeve can help. Sleeve It is proud to be manufacturers of British-made Firesleeves for diverse markets around the world, including:

1. Aerospace and Aviation

Fuel lines and hydraulic systems are at the core of modern aviation, from commercial carriers to fighter jets. There’s no room for compromise when it comes to aircraft, and so you need thermal protection that you can count on. Firesleeve meets a range of aerospace-specific standards, making it an ideal choice for manufacturers and operators.

2. Automotive and Motorsport

Modern automotive design is as much about electronics and computer control as it is about the engine itself. With the rise of electric vehicles, protecting electrical cables and wiring has never been more important within hot engine bays, while at the performance end of the industry, the heat is really on!

3. Steel Mills and Foundries (Molten Splash)

Despite the rise of automation, the risks of smelting and steel foundries are still the same as they have been for centuries – continuous heat, with the constant risk of molten splash in excess of 1000°C. Thermo Firesleeve can provide dependable protection in even the harshest working environments, keeping hoses and cables safe and keeping your production on schedule.

4. Industrial Hydraulic Systems

Hydraulics play a major role in everything from production lines to construction sites. Firesleeve can provide protection for vulnerable hydraulic hoses, as well as removing the risk of devastating pin-hole-burst injuries to operators.

5. Marine and Offshore

In the marine environment, you simply cannot settle for second best. Any failure in your electrics, engine room or transmission could leave you stranded at sea, hours, or even days from help. Thermo Firesleeve keeps your vessel safe in the corrosive environments of the high seas.

Why Choose High-Quality Thermo Firesleeve?

When you look at the potential costs of not installing high-quality thermal protection – both in financial terms, from lost production and damaged equipment, and in human terms, from injuries and even the risk of death – this question answers itself.

Choosing Firesleeve is an easy and cost-effective call to make if you want to protect your people, your plant and your bottom line. To find out more about how Thermo Firesleeve can help protect your industry, talk to our safety experts today.
