Self Fusing Silicone Tape – One Tape, One Hundred Uses

Self fusing silicone tape is one of the most versatile Sleeve It products to have in your toolbox because it can be used for all kinds of repairs and installations, from temporary fixes to long term waterproofing and insulation jobs.

What is self fusing silicone tape?

Self fusing silicone tape is exactly what it says: a flexible silicone tape that fuses to itself without any need for additional adhesives or curing agents. It is also known as fusible tape, self-vulcanising tape, self-amalgamating tape and self-adhesive tape, with all these names referencing the key property of the material, which is that it bonds to itself with no external help.

Sleeve It self fusing silicone tape is thermally stable up to 180°C and can endure short term maximum temperatures of up to 260°C. For the more technically minded, it also has a Shore A hardness of 40 +/- 10.

What is self fusing silicone tape used for?

It might be easier to say what self fusing silicone tape is not used for, because it has so many different uses across a wide range of sectors, from renewable energy to communications, aerospace to marine. With a bond that only gets stronger over time, self fusing silicone tape is as versatile for emergency repairs as it is long-lasting for more permanent uses.

  • In electrics, it can be used to insulate and protect cables and junctions, bundle and organise wiring, protect vehicle electronics in the automotive, marine and aviation industries, as well as sealing outdoor electrical installations against the elements.

  • In plumbing, self fusing silicone tape can be used for immediate emergency repairs to pipes, drains, hoses and other plumbing, as well as long term protection for vulnerable pipework in demanding or corrosive environments

  • In maintenance, no toolbox should be without a roll of self fusing silicone tape, as it is the repairman’s best friend in all sorts of circumstances, including fast fixes to keep production lines moving and vehicles on the move while a more permanent repair is arranged.

How does self fusing silicone tape work?

Self fusing silicone tape comes in an easy to use roll allowing it to be applied in the tightest of spaces for repairs and installations. It’s activated by the initial stretching as you apply the tape, and the bonding begins straight away, creating a strong and water resistant seal.

The chemical process required for full curing takes place over the next few hours, with the exact duration required depending on the ambient conditions of the application. Once complete, the bond is permanent, continuous and watertight, and is both electrically insulating and heat resistant.

Since self fusing silicone tape adheres only to itself, the surfaces do not need the same level of preparation as they would for standard adhesives. It can also be removed without leaving any residue making it ideal for clean temporary repairs and spot fixes. The fact that it does not bond to other surfaces, and leaves no residue when removed, also makes it ideal for protecting surfaces during powder coating and other paint applications.
