What is Self Fusing Tape and How Does It Work?

When you are working in tight spaces, trying to create a watertight or electrically safe repair under pressure, self fusing tape is exactly what you need. No mess, no tape sticking to your fingers or folding on itself, just a quick, clean, permanent repair you can count on.

Self fusing tape is an adhesive-free silicone rubber tape that creates a strong and lasting bond with itself. It can be used in plumbing and electrical repairs, creating an instant seal that only gets stronger over the next 24 hours.

It sounds like magic, but self fusing tape is actually just a very smart use of materials science.

How Does Self Fusing Tape Work?

Self fusing tape doesn’t need an adhesive, because it chemically and physically bonds through polymer science. It’s often described as ‘sticking to itself’, but in fact the two layers of tape don’t stick to each other at all; they meld together to become one single layer.

That’s why the bond is so strong: there are no longer two separate pieces of tape to pull apart, just one solid silicone rubber layer.

How self -using tape works:

  • Stretch the tape – to start the process, you need to stretch the tape to two or three times its original length. This activates the polymers by placing them under tension.

  • Overlap the layers – when the layers are overlapped and pressed together, the polymer chains on each surface intermingle with the polymers on the other, and the separateness of the two surfaces disappears into one. This is called polymer-chain diffusion and cross-linking.

  • Leave for 24 hours – the initial bond is strong and watertight, but over the next 24 hours, polymers will continue to intermingle, making the bond even stronger and more permanent.

What are the benefits of adhesive-free tape?

We’ve all been there… struggling to find the stuck-down end of the tape roll before you can even start, then struggling again as it seems to stick to everything – itself, your fingers, your tools – everything except the repair you need it to stick to.

Even when you do complete a repair with traditional tape, it’s often not long before the ends start to peel back as heat, moisture and oils penetrate the adhesive and break it down. And when you come to replace it, you’re left with a sticky residue on the pipes or wires that simply refuses to budge.

The benefits of self fusing tape mean that you don’t have to put up with any of these problems. Self fusing tape is easy to work with because:

  • It comes with a plastic backing so it unrolls easily

  • It contains no adhesive, so it won’t stick to anything except itself

  • It forms a permanent bond that is waterproof and hard (40 ± 10 Shore A)

  • It is thermally stable from -45°C to 200°C 80°C (and short-term extremes of 260°C)

  • It has ‘excellent’ UV, electrical and ozone resistance, ‘good’ flame and solvent resistance, and ‘good/fair’ resistance to acid, oil and hydrocarbons

  • It leaves no residue when removed

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The nature of the molecular bond creates a single layer that is completely seamless, airtight and waterproof. Some self fusing tape can even be used for underwater repairs in emergencies.

No. Because self fusing tape doesn’t contain any adhesive, it does not leave a residue when it is removed. When you need to remove it, you simply slice it away, leaving the surface perfectly clean.

Once fully cured (usually within 24 hours), the bond is permanent, and the tape cannot be unwrapped and reused like traditional tape. However, the tape can easily be cut away to provide access to the repaired area in the future.

Yes, Sleeve It 369 self fusing silicone tape can withstand continuous temperatures ranging from -45°C to +200°C and short-term exposure ranging from -65°C up to 260°C. This makes it ideal for engine repairs, boilers and hot pipework.
